SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — The San Diego Padres have made history after beating the Cleveland Guardians 7-2 at Petco Park on Monday, giving them a five-game winning streak to start the season for the fi
rst time ever.
The Friars' previous best start to the season in the franchise's 57-year history was 4-0 in 1984, when the team would go on to their first World Series.
The monumental record is a fitting reset from last season's biting conclusion in the playoffs: going 24 consecutive innings scoreless in the last games of the National League Division Series to send the rival Los Angeles Dodgers all the way to a World Series pennant.

At the start of spring training, Padres manager Mike Shildt said the team was motivated heading into the 2025 season "to finish some business." With play in full swing, the team does appear hungry to play it back.
The normal standouts — Manny Machado, Fernando Tatis, Jr. and Jackson Merrill — have unsurprisingly had some great moments thus far. But on Monday, fresh faces made the game.
Kyle Hart, a new addition to the Padres' pitching staff, picked up his first big league win against the Guardians. The former Boston Red Sox left-hander had spent last year with the NC Dinos, where he led the Korean Baseball Organization in strikeouts and won its Cy Young equivalent.

Offensive newcomers to the Padres also had big moments: both Jason Heyward and Gavin Sheets each put a few runs on the board. The latter did so with a pair of two-run doubles, one in the four-run second inning and another in the three-run fifth.
The Padres have two more games against the Guardians in their opening homestand before hitting the road later this week, first heading to Wrigley Field to take on the Chicago Cubs.
