Speeders beware: Speed limit signs installed on Albuquerque trails

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New speed limit signs are popping up on paved trails in Albuquerque as part of a new law that was passed in 2024.
The e-bike ordinance, which went into effect in September, allows e-bikes on paved multi-use trails and open space trails. In an effort to boost safety a
mong all trail users, the city's Parks and Recreation Department has begun installing signs to educate and remind people about the set speed limit.

"So it's really about behavior here, and speed is the number one issue on these paved multi-use trails. So, we wanted to address the prevailing primary subject here. So with a lot of research, we found out that 20, we've determined that 20 miles per hour speed limit on these trails is probably the sweet spot for these trails," explained Dave Simon, director of the Parks and Recreation Department.
The law sets the maximum speed limit at 20 MPH; however, the Parks and Recreation Department can set lower speed limits in places where it feels is necessary for safety. "So areas where we have maybe the trail is narrow, we have a lot of mixture of users or congestion or anywhere we feel a lower speed limit is appropriate, we are going to be setting some slightly lower speed limits in those special zones," said Simon.
The 20 mph speed limit signs were installed about 11 days ago on the Paseo Del Bosque trail, which is the city's most popular trail. The department will gradually, throughout the year, install signs on the other paved trails in the city.
Simon said set speeds apply to all users on the trail, not just e-bike riders. The department also has plans to monitor and enforce speed limits on the trails.
"That'll be everything from feedback speed signs that will tell people sort of how fast they're going and let people self-regulate, all the way up to educational efforts we're going to make with trail users to encourage everybody to respect each other for the safety of all users on the trail," Simon explained, adding that the speed limits are also enforceable by law enforcement officers on the trail.
