Park City writing group encourages selfexpression and storytelling

The Park City Library continues to inspire and promote literacy and creativity with a free monthly writing group. The next session is scheduled to run from 3-4 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, in Meeting Room 101, said Library Specialist Danielle Bean.“We meet monthly to give writing advice, workshop new
writing techniques and share our writing,” she said. “I really think Park City is a unique and creative community. I already know there are a few writing groups in Park City, already. So, the goal for this one was to provide one here at the library that is more catered to the community in a free and open space.”The group is open and free to teens and adults at any level of writing experience, Bean said.“This space is meant to encourage aspiring writers and assist more experienced writers,” she said. “We welcome beginning writers who want an introduction to what a writing group would look like, and this would be a safe place for them to experience that.”April 5 marks the group’s second meeting, according to Bean.“During the first meeting, we had three attendees and went around and talked about our experiences with writing and what their goals were so we could cater to their needs,” she said. “We also did a freewrite to start things off and get those creative juices flowing.”The freewrite started with a prompt, and the group wrote for 15 minutes, according to Bean.“We then shared those writings with each other to get a sense of styles and what genres they liked to write,” she said. “We also did a little writing exercise to help improve grammar and sentence structure.”The goal for the April 5 meeting is to have the group bring in writings they have been working on, Bean said.“We will share and workshop these writings together,” she said. “So, we invite people who weren’t at last month’s group to bring in some of their writings so we can also show and workshop them in the group as well.”Bean’s love for writing inspired her to create the library’s writing group.“I’ve always loved writing, and I’ve probably written creatively since I was in junior high,” she said. “I also studied English in college and really enjoyed it.”One of the big draws for Bean was the opportunity to express herself.“I’ve always thought better on paper than out loud,” she said with a laugh.Bean also feels writing is a way for people to hear and learn about others’ stories.“I think writing what you care about and how you see the world can give you a voice,” she said. “Obviously at the library we value individual voices, and that’s why we have all of these books, so we want to encourage people who want to express themselves and tell stories by providing tools for them to use.”No registration is required to join the Park City Library’s writing group, Bean said.“People can just come in and meet some great people and have fun writing,” she said.Although the group meets monthly on a Saturday, there isn’t a set date, according to Community Engagement Librarian Becca Lael.“Since it doesn’t land on the same day, we encourage people to check the Park City Library’s calendar for when the next groups are scheduled,” she said.Park City Library Writing GroupWhen: 3 p.m., Saturday, April 5
