INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 16-year-old boy faces murder charges for his role in a January homicide on Indianapolis’ west side.
The teen’s name has not been released.
According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, 37-year-old Rodney Nixon Jr. was found dead at a west sid
e apartment complex on Jan. 20.
Officers were dispatched to The Retreat on Washington apartments on North Warman Avenue around 3:37 a.m. after 911 callers reported hearing shots fired in the area.
They arrived and found Nixon suffering a gunshot wound inside an interior hallway outside the individual apartments. He died at the scene.
Homicide detectives continued the investigation, later learning a disturbance broke out inside an apartment shortly before the shooting.
They also identified the 16-year-old as a suspect. The teen was also wanted on an active warrant for “dangerous possession of a firearm.”
On Jan. 30, the teen was arrested on his warrant in the 1100 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street, but was released sometime later.
After further investigation, the teen was arrested again on Monday on the preliminary charge of murder.
IMPD did not say how the teen and victim knew each other or if the teen would be charged as an adult.
