The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission announced that masonry repairs could resume as early as this week on the 140-year-old Calhoun Street Bridge between Trenton and Morrisville.
Work on the bridge’s piers began last fall but had to be postponed due to cold weather before completion in 2
024.
The Calhoun Street span is the second of four Commission river crossings identified as needing masonry repairs following biennial inspections conducted earlier in 2024. Repairs to the Lumberville-Raven Rock Pedestrian Bridge between Solebury, PA and Delaware Township, NJ were completed in October.
The remaining Calhoun Street Bridge pier repairs are expected to be finished by the end of April. Crews will then shift to the Washington Crossing Bridge followed by the Riverton-Belvidere Bridge.
With the exception of a single reinforced-concrete pier at Washington Crossing, the piers at all four bridges date to the mid-19th century. The Washington Crossing piers were constructed in 1833-34, Riverton-Belvidere’s in 1835-36, Lumberville-Raven Rock’s in 1853-55, and Calhoun Street’s in 1859-60.
