Man killed in hitandrun while changing tire on Interstate 40 in North Carolina

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) – A man is dead after getting hit by a car along Interstate 40 in Raleigh on Monday morning, police said.
According to the Raleigh Police Department, 48-year-old Jose Abel Vasquez was working on his vehicle between 5:55 a.m. and 6:05 a.m. on the right-hand shoulder of I-40
West.

Investigators said that Vasquez was changing a flat tire when an unknown vehicle crossed the fog line and crashed into him. The suspect vehicle then drove away from the scene, police said.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital, which is where he ultimately died from his injuries, police said.
"There is no suspect information available at this time," according to a Monday news release from the Raleigh Police Department. "No witnesses have been identified."
Several westbound lanes on I-40 were shut down for hours as a result of the wreck, causing traffic to back up for miles. The interstate has since fully reopened.
Police said this case remains under investigation.
