– With live saxophone music, special guests, a champagne toast and an epic group photo, Sadie G. Mays Health & Rehabilitation Center kicked off its 78th Anniversary Celebration. It was held on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, in the newly renovated Banquet Hall of the skilled nursing facility on Atl
anta’s Westside.
The nonprofit skilled nursing facility was founded in 1947 by Sadie Gray Mays, a social worker, professor, community organizer, and the wife of famed educator, Dr. Benjamin E. Mays. Originally known as Happy Haven Nursing Home, the 206-bed facility is fully accredited by Medicare, Medicaid, the Veterans Administration, and the state of Georgia. It has recently undergone major renovations and remodeling of all the public rooms and resident rooms.
“We’re very happy to be here to celebrate 78 years of Sadie G. Mays helping the community, giving back, and challenging the health equity formula in Fulton County,” said Marvin Arrington, Jr., Fulton County Commissioner, and the event’s keynote speaker. He also shared how his father, the late Marvin Arrington, Sr., former Fulton County Superior Court Justice and Atlanta City Council President, had received excellent care at Sadie G. Mays.
Another highlight of the event was “Sadie’s Divine Community Choir,” comprised of the facility’s residents, singing a rousing rendition of “How Excellent!” Sadie G. Mays’ Board Chair, Samuel W. Bacote III, and resident, Bailey Waymon, led the 80+ attendees in a champagne toast. Resident, Darrell Glover read an original poem and Pastor Mark Mitchell of Passionate Care Hospice, a Sadie G. Mays Partner organization, provided the inspirational closing prayer. In what has become a tradition, all the guests posed for an epic photo to mark the occasion. Afterwards, the guests enjoyed cake, ice cream and other tasty refreshments.
Sadie G. Mays’ Interim Executive Director, Malik Hakeem, expressed gratitude to everyone who helped to make the milestone celebration a success, including:
