AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) - The 25% tariffs President Donald Trump imposed on auto imports are set to take effect this week. This could not only raise car costs but also affect repair shops.
Porrotta's Auto Repair & Sales in Agawam is one business that could be affected. The owner Bruno explained
to 22News that half of the cars he works on are foreign-made, so the tariffs will make repairing those cars more difficult and more expensive.
Prices for imported parts like engines, transmissions, and electrical components could increase. "Parts fairly recently in the past five years have doubled, tripled," says Bruno Franceso parrotta. "After the pandemic, it was dramatic. It was it was rough. So another 25% doesn't help. But, you know, we just, you know, taking care of the car is important so you don't have to buy so many parts."
According to the American Property Casualty Insurance Association, about 6 in every 10 auto replacement parts used in U.S. auto shop repairs are imported from Mexico, Canada, and China.
