ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Leaders of the Republican Party of New Mexico are speaking out following what they call an "intentional" fire that caused severe damage to their headquarters. Albuquerque Fire Rescue responded to the building near Jefferson St. and San Francisco Rd. just before 6 a.m.

Crews said the flames mostly caused damage to the front entrance, along with smoke damage throughout the building. It's made the space uninhabitable for the time being. "This is not how democracy works no one has the right to threaten intimidate or attack others because of their beliefs," said Chairwoman Amy Barela, Republican Party of New Mexico.
RPNM said they believe the cause was arson. "The entry has been destroyed, reduced to ashes with hateful graffiti defacing the walls. This was not just an attack on our building, it was an attack on our values, on our free speech, and the right to every new Mexican who wants to participate in the democratic process without fear," said Barela.
Teresa Leger Fernandez echoed Barela's sentiment over the weekend, saying in part, "Political violence of any sort is unacceptable, including this attack. The perpetrators must be held accountable. Every American should be able to freely and safely participate in our democracy."
Barela hopes that moving forward, New Mexicans can do better, citing the long list of violent attacks from the recent mass shootings in Las Cruces to everyday crime in the Metro. "This isn't just about Republicans, this is about every New Mexican," said Barela.
Albuquerque Fire Rescue is still investigating the cause of the fire. The RPNM said they don't know how much repairs will cost. ...read more read less
