(COLORADO SPRINGS)-- Mr. Monopoly made a special appearance in Colorado Springs on Monday, March 31, and creators of the famous board game unveiled a new edition of the game featuring Colorado Springs locations.
Mr. Monopoly showed us the new edition, which features places like Pikes Peak, the U.
S. Olympic Training Center and so much more, but the best part is that the community helped game makers decide what to include.
"I think I'm going to hang it in my office, I think it's kind of cool," said Hutch Thurston, the Director of Sales at Flying W Ranch.
The game is rolling the dice on Colorado Springs and decided to feature 22 businesses and attractions.
"We're here to accept our monopoly space on the board, and it's pretty wild. I mean, an iconic game played all our lives, and now we're featured on it, crazy," said Thurston as he eagerly held his game slot.
Part of the game includes unique Community Chest cards that highlight Southern Colorado.
"Josh and John's Ice Cream, places like that have written different messages to address their business needs, and marketing needs on the card. So the exposure is great during gameplay," said Aaron Green, the Sales Executive for Top Trumps USA.
It also features places like Glen Eyrie Castle, the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, Palmer Park, the Cog Railway, and many more.
"When I see people look at the board for the first time and they start smiling ear to ear because that place means something to them, that ice cream place, that castle, that hiking trail, that nostalgia, to us is irreplaceable," said Green.
And many of those places were voted on by the community when game creators announced the game last May.
"There's always something that is going to get left off. So what we did is we came here in May and we said, 'tell us what should be on the game.' We got hundreds of emails, and then me and my team, we sorted through all those emails and I called all these business owners, all these organizations," said Green.
Everything about the game is all things Southern Colorado, except the playing pieces and the four corners.
"What Hasbro's found out over the years is the memories that you have of fighting over who gets the cat, the dog, the race car, the ship, the thimble, the top hat, we want to keep those memories alive. So we decided on the city editions to keep the original tokens," said Green.
He said one of the best parts of making city edition games is supporting local businesses and giving tourist a way to find out how to enjoy their trip.
"We chose Colorado Springs for a few reasons. One, it's a perfect size city, there's tons to call on. I had meetings with every business in town, and people are excited, they're proud that maybe it's not the city to the north," said Green.
If you want to get the dice rolling, the game can be found at local retailers. ...read more read less
