SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) --The Dorchester County Legislative Delegation met Monday evening to discuss what a consolidation between Dorchester School Districts 2 and 4 would be and hear the community's thoughts on the potential merger.Residents asked the board to find another solution.
"Nobody rea
lly asked us students how we feel. We were never asked how this would affect us, and this would take away a lot of opportunities for students and a lot of opportunities that we enjoy," said Makayla Leblanc, a student in DD4.
Many worry that Dorchester School District Four schools would be left behind in a consolidation.
"This is going to affect the way that our students learn and kids like me with ieps and other kids with disabilities its going to be harder with bigger groups in classes when its supposed to be smaller groups," said Bayley Leblanc, a student in DD4.
While the consolidation is a potential solution to the funding problem in Dorchester School District Two, community members asked the delegation to look into other ways to provide funding.
"There are several school district throughout our state for example Spartanburg, they have a model where they have very separate school districts they have a thriving commercial industry thriving, residential and every school district there is able to be successful so I look at that and I see we really have not explored all potential options for our community," said (Justin Farnsworth, a DD2 school board member.
Some state representatives in attendance thanked the community for showing up to give their input, with a few saying they had been influenced by people who spoke out at the meeting.State Representative Chris Murphy, who drafted the bill, was not in attendance.
There are expected to be more public hearings on the proposed consolidation. ...read more read less
