Mar 31, 2025
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) – A dog has died following an attack involving a pit bull in Canandaigua, police confirmed.
On March 23, Canandaigua Police responded to the report of a loose dog near Mason Street and Clark Street around 8:38 a.m. Police said the incident later evolved into a dog-versus-
dog attack with the owner of a pit bull attempting to restrain the dog.
CPD said when police arrived, they found a 12-year-old terrier in grave condition following an attack from the pit bull.
According to police, the owner of the pit bull was walking the dog on a leash when it broke itself free, ran to the opposite side of the road and attacked the terrier. The owner was able to pry the pit bull off of the terrier and restrained the dog until police arrived.
CPD officers assisted the terrier's owner with transporting the dog to an emergency veterinarian clinic for treatment, but the dog died while being transported. The pit bull was secured in a patrol vehicle.
The owner of the pit bull was issued a summons to appear in the City of Canandaigua Court on March 31 for having a dangerous dog.
The pit bull remains with the Ontario County Humane Society until the City of Canandaigua Court makes a decision regarding the incident.
According to the Ontario County Humane Society, there was one reported incident of the dog running at large in 2023 which was handled in the Town of Farmington Court. ...read more read less
