Mar 31, 2025
HANOVER COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Bret Schardein, who has served in Powhatan County's government for just under a decade, is leaving to become one of Hanover County's Deputy County Administrators.
On Monday, March 31, Powhatan and Hanover counties issued press releases announcing Schardein's departure
and hiring, respectively.
Schardein became Powhatan's Director of Community Development in fall 2016. Since then, he served in a variety of roles before landing the job as Powhatan's County Administrator in 2023.
"I want to sincerely thank the Board of Supervisors, our dedicated staff, and the citizens of Powhatan for the opportunities I’ve had over the past eight years," Schardein said in Powhatan's press release. "It has been an honor to serve this remarkable community and to get to know so many of its incredible residents. Powhatan is a truly special place."
According to Hanover officials, Schardein is a Hanover resident who, as of the time of reporting, serves on the county's Board of Zoning Appeals.

In his new role as one of Hanover's three Deputy County Administrators, Schardein will oversee several departments and act as the county's "liaison to local and state human services agencies," among other responsibilities.
“Bret brings an impressive track record of leadership, strategic vision and genuine dedication to public service,” said John Budesky, Hanover's County Administrator, in the county's press release. “His expertise and understanding of local government will be invaluable as we continue to enhance the services and support that we provide to our residents.”
Schardein will begin his work as Hanover's Deputy County Administrator on July 1. At the same time, he will continue to work with Powhatan until the end of 2025 "to ensure a smooth and thoughtful transition," he said.
“Living in Hanover and working in the region, I've experienced firsthand the exceptional work being done in this community,” Schardein said in Hanover's press release. “I'm thrilled to bring my experience and passion to this talented team and look forward to contributing to Hanover's continued success in delivering valuable services to our residents.” ...read more read less
