DUI charge against State Rep. Sanchez dismissed after civil plea

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — A criminal driving under the influence charge against Rhode Island State Representative Enrique Sanchez was dismissed Monday.
Sanchez had pleaded guilty to refusing to take a breathalyzer test in traffic court last week.
The judge sentenced him to an alcohol treatment co
urse, 10 hours of community service, and required him to have an ignition interlock system installed in his vehicle for six months.
Then, prosecutors filed to dismiss Sanchez’s misdemeanor charge for DUI in Superior Court Monday.
A spokesperson for Attorney General Peter Neronha’s office said: “As is common with first offense DUI cases, since the defendant admitted to the civil charge of refusing to submit to a chemical test at the Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal, the State dismissed the criminal charge.”
Sanchez was pulled over by Cranston police on Reservoir Ave. in February.
The officer filing the report wrote that Sanchez stayed stopped at a red light, even after it turned green.
Body camera video showed his interactions with officers, in which Sanchez asked to call an Uber before being arrested.
The officer wrote in the report that she “smelled a heavy odor of alcoholic beverage” on Sanchez’s breath.
In a social media post days later, Sanchez said he would “not let [his] personal actions become a distraction from the issues that truly matter,” and vowed to continue serving in the Rhode Island House of Representatives.
Sanchez represents District 9 (Providence) as a Democrat.
He was first elected in 2022.
Sanchez did not return an email message Monday seeking comment on the dismissal of the criminal charge.
