CRANSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Cranston Police Department released body camera footage from a drug bust which started as a traffic stop.
On March 27, police arrested 21-year-old Teddy Lopez after officers allegedly found drugs inside his vehicle during a traffic stop, which he was initially pulled
over for not wearing a seatbelt.
A search of the vehicle allegedly found 11 kilograms of cocaine hidden inside a compartment along with fentanyl, marijuana, and $1700.
“In a city environment to seize 11 kilos at a traffic stop, It’s highly unusual,” Cranston Police Department Colonel Michael Winquist said.
Body cam footage from the Cranston Police Department show the moments officers made the drug bust at the Park Avenue and Reservoir Avenue intersection.
“What we have here is we have people who bring this poison into this community, with no remorse whatsoever and they just profit from people’s misery,” Winquist said.
Lopez faces a felony drug charge. He has no other criminal history.
Cranston police said Lopez told officers he is a finance major at Providence College.
Providence College confirmed Lopez as a student, and said in a statement, “The news of this incident was both surprising and disappointing. We are gathering all necessary information to determine next steps in accordance with our student conduct policy.”
Lopez was held without bail, with a status conference in his case scheduled for April 3.
