CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — The dean of students at Cranston Public Schools was arrested early Monday morning under suspicion of driving drunk.
Vincent Turchetta, 61, was found passed out behind the wheel of a car around 12:45 a.m. at the intersection of Park and Reservoir avenues, according to Cra
nston police.
In the arrest report obtained by 12 News, a responding officer said he arrived to find Turchetta's vehicle in the westbound turn lane, with two vehicles stuck behind him. Police said the vehicle's brake lights were on, indicating his foot was on the brake.
The officer knocked on the window, the report said, but it wasn't until he opened the driver's door that Turchetta woke up. Police said the officer had him put the vehicle in park, then removed the key and had Turchetta sit on the curb nearby. He smelled of alcohol and showed signs of intoxication, according to police.
Turchetta told police he was on his way home from a house party in Warwick and had consumed three beers. He refused to take a field sobriety test, police said.
Turchetta is charged with DUI (first offense, BAC unknown) and refusal to submit to a chemical test. Police said he was arraigned before a justice of the peace and is due to appear in court on April 9.
Cranston Public Schools leadership confirmed that Turchetta works for the district, but declined to comment since it's a personnel matter.
