Into the archives: Gas prices spike in summer 2001
Mar 31, 2025
EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — As temperatures warm up outside each spring, gasoline prices tend to increase as well.
This week, the average price in Rhode Island ticked up to $2.95 per gallon for regular unleaded, and it was two cents higher in Massachusetts. Both were well below the national
average, however, which is currently sitting at $3.16 per gallon, according to AAA.
While the trend was the same back in 2001, it was a much different story regarding the prices.
