(CHAFFEE COUNTY, Colo.) — According to the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office (CCSO), on Wednesday, March 26, law enforcement officers in Salida responded to an in-progress domestic assault where the suspect threatened officers' lives and attacked a deputy, trying to choke him and grab his gun.

SO reported that law enforcement arrived at the scene on the 800 block of I Street in Salida around 7:30 p.m., where the assault was reported to be in progress. The person who called emergency services warned that the suspect had threatened to kill any officers who approached.
A Chaffee County Sheriff's deputy was the first to arrive and was met in the roadway by 46-year-old Cory Pottebaum, according to CCSO. As the deputy got out of his patrol car, Pottebaum allegedly approached him aggressively, yelling foul language and threats at him.

According to CCSO, despite repeated orders to back off, Pottebaum came up to the deputy and hit him, and the two fell to the ground in a struggle. As the deputy attempted to gain control, Pottebaum managed to get his arm around the deputy's throat in an apparent attempt to choke him.
Pottebaum allegedly tried several times to grab the deputy's gun from his holster, but several more deputies and Salida Police officers arrived and were able to take Pottebaum into custody.
“When someone is trying to choke you or take your sidearm as a police officer, it becomes a fight for your life situation where lethal force is typically justified," said Sheriff Andy Rohrich. "I am glad their ground fighting training allowed the deputies to gain compliance of Pottebaum before they were forced to have to make that decision. This is another example of why we train so hard. Our training is meant to save lives, even the suspect's, if we can.”
CCSO said the victim of the domestic abuse was a woman who was treated for minor injuries at the scene. Pottebaum and the deputy were treated for minor injuries at the hospital, after which Pottebaum was taken to the Chafee County Sheriff's Office Detention Center where he was held with no bond on charges of Assault (Domestic Violence), Child Abuse, Assault on a Police Officer, and Criminal Attempt to Disarm a Police Officer. ...read more read less
