Mar 31, 2025
Johns Hopkins University’s graduating class of 2025 will hear from Khan Academy founder Sal Khan when he delivers the commencement address Thursday, May 22.Khan started recording educational videos and posting them on YouTube in 2008. Initially focused on mathematics and science, Khan Academy’s
video lessons now also cover subjects such as literature, history, and computer science.
To date, Khan Academy’s YouTube channel has amassed 8.85 million subscribers. The nonprofit also has a channel specifically geared toward children, Khan Academy Kids.“The innovative approach to education that Sal Khan brought to life more than 20 years ago has reimagined the learning experience for students worldwide,” Johns Hopkins University President Ron Daniels said in an article in Johns Hopkins University’s publication The Hub. “Our institution’s first president Daniel Coit Gilman in 1876 articulated our mission as bringing knowledge to the world. In embodying that mission, Khan offers a stirring example to our graduates who grew up using Khan’s technologies and now seek to make their own lasting and meaningful impact.”In 2023, Khan Academy launched Khanmigo, an AI tool meant to help teachers plan lessons, tutor students, and accomplish other classroom tasks more effectively.“We’re at the cusp of using AI for probably the biggest positive transformation that education has ever seen,” Khan said in a 2023 TED talk.Khanmigo “is not a cheating tool,” Khan said. He demonstrated that the AI will not give students the answer to a problem, rather it will help students determine the next steps for finding the solution themselves.
“Not only does it notice the mistake; it asks the student to explain their reasoning … It’s able to divine what is probably the misconception in that student’s mind,” Khan said in that TED talk, adding this tutoring strategy is not only applicable to mathematics, but also to other subjects like coding.Khan will receive an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree at the May 22 commencement address. About 1,450 Johns Hopkins undergraduates, 60 graduate students, and 130 doctoral students will receive their degrees at the address, and a total of about 11,360 Hopkins students will graduate in 2025. ...read more read less
