SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- Two people were killed after a car traveling on eastbound State Route 94 through San Diego went airborne, struck a sign and landed on its roof. The car, a Dodge Challenger, was head east on SR-94 to the northbound transition of Interstate 15 just before 12:30 a.m. Saturd ay, according to California Highway Patrol. Helicopter lands on street, causing traffic backup on nearby I-15 in northern San Diego County For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the roadway of the transition ramp, soared into the air and struck an overhead sign. The Challenger landed on its roof within the westbound lanes of SR-94, authorities stated. The driver and a passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. Their names are being withheld pending family notification by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office. According to CHP, debris from the crash caused minor damage to another vehicle, but no one else was injured. The incident is still under investigation by the CHP San Diego Area.
