KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two people are dead after a home caught fire in rural Cass County late Sunday night, according to the Garden City Fire Protection District and Ambulance Service. The fire was reported around 10:45 p.m. at a home on O'Bannon Road near 299th Street, Garden City Fire Chief Mark L opez said. When firefighters arrived, they observed heavy fire conditions at the home. Lopez said firefighters tried to rescue the trapped residents but were not able to go inside due to the intense heat and fire. Man charged with murder in connection to shooting of KC store owner It took firefighters about three hours to bring the fire under control, Lopez said. Inside the home, they found the bodies of two adults. According to the fire protection district, it appeared one person had made it out of the burning home but went back inside to save the other person and was overtaken by the smoke and fire.  The victims' names have not yet been released. The Missouri State Fire Marshal's Office is leading the investigation, including determining the origin and cause of the fire.
