Andrew Luck hires former Colts head coach at Stanford

STANFORD, Calif. (WISH) — Frank Reich has found a new home. Well, a temporary one, at least.
Stanford has hired the former Indianapolis Colts head coach as the Cardinal’s interim head football coach, according to ESPN. Reich’s agreed to a one-year interim role while the university searc
hes for a replacement for former head coach Troy Taylor, who was fired last week.
This decision reunites Reich with his former Colts quarterback Andrew Luck. Luck serves as Cardinal football’s general manager and was the lead decision-maker in Taylor’s firing. Last week’s abrupt move came after ESPN reported that the university was looking into Taylor in an alleged employee abuse case. According to CBS Sports, Luck decided to let Taylor go while a majority of the staff was away for spring break.
Stanford was already gearing up for spring football under Taylor’s leadership. The Cardinal camp opens Tuesday — the last remaining ACC team to start workouts and practice. The annual spring game is scheduled for Saturday, April 26.
Less than a week after firing Taylor, Luck brings in his former NFL head coach to help lead his alma mater. Reich coached Luck in his final season with the Colts, where they both led the Horseshoe to its first playoff appearance in four years. The duo helped beat the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round before losing to the Kansas City Chiefs the following week.
Luck won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award during his one full season with Reich in Indy. He threw for 4,593 yards and 39 touchdowns that year — his second-best season of his career. Luck was also named to the Pro Bowl for the fourth time and ended the season with his best passer rating of his career at 98.7.
It was the months that followed the fans might remember more. Luck shockingly announced his retirement from the NFL in August during a preseason game to start the following season. Luck’s abrupt retirement left Reich and the Colts scrambling to find another franchise quarterback to replace him. Since then, the Colts have had 10 different starting quarterbacks — Jacoby Brissett, Brian Hoyer, Philip Rivers, Cason Wentz, Matt Ryan, Sam Ehlinger, Nick Foles, Gardner Minshew, Joe Flacco and Anthony Richardson.
Reich coached the Colts from 2018-22. He was fired in the middle of an abysmal 4-12-1 season three years ago. He was then hired, and quickly fired, as the Carolina Panthers head coach.
The Cardinal starts its season on the road against Hawai’i Saturday, Aug. 23.
