American Piano Awards Finals come to Indianapolis
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The American Pianists Awards Finals Week is officially underway, and one of the five finalists vying for the top prize is no stranger to the competition. Michael Davidman, an accomplished pianist and returning finalist, is
ready to showcase his talent once again in Indianapolis.
Davidman, who previously competed in the 2021 competition, says this experience feels new despite his past participation.
“The last time I did this it was during COVID, so things were different,” Davidman said. “This time, it feels like a fresh start.”
Since his last appearance in the competition, Davidman has taken his studies overseas, moving to Spain to train under a new teacher. His focus has been on refining his technique and artistry, blending musical intentions with the technical aspects of playing.
“When you perform, it’s a way of practicing. The more experience you have on stage, the more free you feel. That’s the goal, making every performance fresh and spontaneous,” he said.
While he is focused on studying music, Davidman takes spare time to explore and enjoy different cultures, especially during studies in Spain.
“I love reading, watching films that make me think differently, and, of course, trying new restaurants,” he said. “A few weeks ago, after a concert at school, we went to this great Mexican restaurant. That was fun.”
If Davidman takes home the top prize, he’ll receive a package worth more than $200,000, including an artist residency at the University of Indianapolis and a recording contract with Steinway & Sons. But winning means more than just accolades to Davidman. It would be a chance to expand his career and continue performing with orchestras around the world.
“The more I play on stage, the more I grow as an artist. This is another step in that journey,” he said.
The American Pianists Awards Finals Week runs through April 5, with free daily concerts at Christ Church Cathedral. The competition concludes with performances featuring the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, where the winner will be announced.
