250+ employers looking to hire through Project Indy summer jobs program
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — As summer approaches, Mayor Joe Hogsett is working to ensure young people in Indianapolis have access to job opportunities rather than being left on the streets.
The mayor announced that more than
250 employers in the city are ready to offer summer jobs through Project Indy, a program designed to provide work experience and valuable skills to young people between the ages of 16 and 24.
Mayor Hogsett made the announcement while visiting churches across Indianapolis, including New Direction Church on the city’s east side. He emphasized the importance of engaging youth in meaningful employment and highlighted Project Indy as a decade-long initiative that connects thousands of young people to jobs each year.
“Isn’t that the American dream?” Mayor Hogsett asked.
The mayor’s outreach efforts come ahead of Easter and he’s partnering with local pastors and their congregations to spread awareness about available job opportunities. By working with community leaders, the city hopes to reach more young people who can benefit from summer employment.
“We’re hiring for over 400 different seasonal positions. Lifeguards, camp counselors are kind of some of the big ones folks think of. Through April 5, we actually have a $500 sign-on bonus, which is really great. Even if you miss that deadline, there’s still a $250 sign-on bonus,” Alex Cortwright, chief communications officer with Indy Parks, said.
Cortwright added, “We’re looking at a couple pools in particular that we’re especially wanting lifeguards at. Garfield Park on the south side…Riverside is another big one that we’re looking to fill a lot of those jobs at this summer,”
Erika Cheney, vice president of career-connected learning at EmployIndy, says thousands of jobs are available on the city portal. “We have several employers on the portal that are youth-friendly employers, so I encourage students to come and look for jobs there.”
There will be a hiring event on April 10 at Turning Point Family Worship Center, 4501 N. Post Rd. in Indianapolis.
