DENVER (KDVR) — Englewood police have recovered a 200-year-old painting of George Washington after it was reported stolen in 2024.
The historic painting was originally reported stolen on Jan. 22, 2024, when Englewood police received a call about a theft from a storage unit in the 3300 block of
South Santa Fe Drive.
According to police, the artwork was an early 1800s painting of the United States' first president. The Englewood Police Department and the FBI Denver Field Office worked together to investigate the case.

Over a year later, in March, Englewood police said a Crimestoppers tip "provided a crucial lead" and said multiple people may have been involved in the theft. Following an investigation, an Englewood investigator identified a person who reportedly had the artwork.

The investigator found the individual who claimed he had unknowingly acquired the stolen painting.
"He explained that while staying at a Denver hotel in 2024, a hotel clerk had given him the painting after finding it abandoned in a vacated room. Due to the widespread publicity surrounding the theft, he hesitated to come forward at the time," said Englewood police in a press release.

After weeks of negotiating between police and a representative of the possessor, police said the painting was voluntarily surrendered to law enforcement on March 28. Police said the artwork was largely undamaged, with only minor cosmetic damage to the frame.
The painting was insured, and it will now be turned over to the insurance company. ...read more read less
