BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- A Buffalo man was sentenced Monday morning to a determinate sentence of 20 years for killing his girlfriend at MLK Jr. Park in the spring of 2021, the Erie County District Attorney's Office announced.
Mushagdusa Nankumba, 22, beat and strangled Larrinsha Johnson, 18, in a
vehicle parked at the park the morning of April 17. Nankumba contacted a family member who then contacted police. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was later determined that she died from asphyxia due to strangulation. He pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in February.
Nankumba was transferred to a psychiatric facility in Rochester following a forensic exam in August. He was eventually found competent to proceed to trial and returned to court in June 2023.
Along with the 20 years, Nankumba will be subjected to five years of post release supervision.
