Mar 31, 2025
NEWPORT, R.I. (WLNE) — Newport police are hosting a community meeting Monday night to discuss public safety with a focus on speed cameras.
Some of those public safety concerns discussed in the meeting will include the speed cameras that are being installed.
Newport Police Chief Ryan Duffy, alon
g with several commanders from different divisions, will be on the panel.
They will address speeding concerns and the potential expansion of traffic cameras throughout the city.
Back in 2023, the police department held a similar meeting proposing red light cameras to address crashes and speeding at busy intersections.
One of the locations previously under review was Admiral Kalbfus Road near Hillside Avenue, where a bicyclist was killed that year.
The newspaper Newport This Week reported a crash that injured three people at that same intersection just last week.
Newport This Week reported that traffic on Admiral Kalbfus has increased after RIDOT’s Pell Bridge ramp realignment project significantly altered traffic patterns in 2023.
The city council has requested safety improvements from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation, but as of right now, none have been installed.
Monday’s meeting will be held at Salve Regina University in the O’Hare Academic Center from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
