Parrot Heads have big fundraising goal for Walk MS
Mar 31, 2025
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Walk MS is this weekend, and the race to the fundraising finish line is underway. And though the race is technically never over, one local organization has a big goal, and members need your help to get there.
The Parrot Head Club of Tidewater is the premier Jimmy Bu
ffett fan club in Virginia. It's been around for 30 years.
"In that 30 years, our motto has been party with a purpose," said founding Parrot Head Club member Herb Holzheter. "So as a club, everybody has a great time, but we give back to the community. All in all, we've raised over $1 million for charities over our 30 years."
Holzheter said the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is one of the charities to benefit from their fundraising. It's a cause close to club member Jim Levick's heart.
"My wife has MS and a club member has MS and one of our club member's granddaughters has MS," Levick said.
You can't miss the Parrot Heads at Walk MS. Instead of wasting away again in Margaritaville, they bring the party — and the funds — to the event.
"We started raising money in 2018," Levick told WAVY-TV 10 anchor Katie Collett, who was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2012. "Back then, you were doing a fair job of raising money, and we were doing a fair job, and we came in either second or third to you, and so our motto [at Walk MS] has always been, 'We're going to kick WAVY's butt.'"
"We encourage a butt kicking, because that means you raised even more money than us," Collett said, laughing.
It's a friendly fundraising challenge with a common goal.
"Hopefully we're going to work on a cure," Levick said. "Every year, some new drug comes out, and so we're getting close to solving the MS secret, and we hope that within the next two or three years, somebody will find a cure."
