Rain, hail, tornadoes: How to prepare as spring storms ramp up
Mar 31, 2025
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- In the Mid-South, we are no strangers to spring storms. Many saw hail, heavy rain, and even a tornado overnight in Poinsett County, Arkansas as severe thunderstorms moved through the area.
Storm chaser Scott Hollinger captured on video a confirmed tornado on the ground, and WREG
received multiple videos of what viewers saw from their homes, like hail -- some bigger than a quarter in size.

With the threat of more severe weather later this week, emergency management officials are sharing the importance of having an emergency kit ready. That should include flashlights, batteries, and closed-toed shoes.
You should also keep any medications and important documents with you in case you need to leave.
The main tip is to know where your safe place is, especially in case of a tornado. That could mean a shelter or a secure place in your home.
"Below ground is best. An interior room is ok. That's the safest place to be, an interior room on the lower level of your residence," said Bill Phillips with Lawrence County Emergency Management. "But if you have a basement and get to a basement, that is going to be the place to be. And what we're telling folks is to have that lined up and be prepared to do what you need to do."
One challenge in Tennessee is the rocky soil which prevents most people from having basements. Instead, go to small interior rooms like closets and hallways.
