At least 2 dead after storms in central Indiana
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Dozens of warnings were issued Sunday afternoon and night as a gusty springs storms moved across the state, leaving at least two people dead, another hurt, and trails of damage.
The National Weather Service received a rep
ort that in Valparaiso, 34-year-old Jagbir Singh of Ontario, Canada, died when his semi truck rolled southeast of the intersection of U.S. 30 and State Road 49. Winds in the area gusted to 81 mph about 2 p.m. Central Time (3 p.m. EDT). News 8 reached out to authorities in Porter County in northwest Indiana for more information.
The semi was one of at least four that had been overturned during strong winds, according to reports to the National Weather Service.
One person died in Elkhart County when high winds blew over an Amish buggy near State Road 13 and County Road 43 around near Millersburg around 5 p.m. Sunday, the NWS Northern Indiana Office said.
Also, in the unincorporated community of Donaldson in Marshall County in northern Indiana, a person was hurt when a mobile home was demolished, the weather service learned. No additional details were immediately available.
More than 114,000 customers of Hoosier electricity utilities were without power shortly before 8:30 p.m., according to poweroutage.us. That number had dropped to more than 112,000 by 9 p.m. as the storms had moved beyond Indiana and crews began to restore power.
In multiple locations across Indiana, the weather service received dozens of reports of trees falling into houses, garages, other structures, and vehicles, and onto roads, blocking them. Trees in Bartholomew County, where a tornado warning was issued Sunday night, were reported to have been downed and left without bark on them.
At the west gate of Brown County State Park in Nashville, numerous treetops were taken out, and trees were toppled. Brown County was another of the areas in central Indiana where a tornado warning was issued Sunday night.
The National Weather Service said Sunday night it planned to send crews to survey damage Monday in Brown County with “the potential need in Monroe and Bartholomew” counties.

A photo showed metal roof panels peeled from an outbuilding at the Benton County Fairgrounds in Boswell.
In Cass County, structural damage to a barn and a silo was reported near Logansport, with sheet metal hanging from power lines.
Near St. Johns in DeKalb County, strong winds damaged a billboard along I-69.
In Rochester in Fulton County, the emergency management agency had a small radio tower downed, and a large portion of a metal outbuilding lost its roof and a wall.
In North Judson in Starke County, large sections of the roof were blown off St. Peter Lutheran Church & School in North Judson.
In addition to gusty winds, some areas suffered hail damage. Near Evansville and Terre Haute, hail with the diameter of peas and quarters was reported amid torrential rain.
Tornado watches issued across the state ahead of the storms had expired as storms moved east toward Ohio.
