DOGE's claim of saving $1 million at Ohio State doesn't fit any records
Mar 31, 2025
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- DOGE said it canceled three grants given to Ohio State last week, reportedly saving over $1 million in tax dollars. But the university could not find records supporting these claims.
According to the DOGE website, three Ohio State grants were terminated on March 23:
A
grant from the Department of Defense titled "YIP U.S. INFLUENCE IN THE WESTERN PACIFIC: LEGACY OF HISTORICAL AIRSTRIKES ON ANTI-AMERICAN SENTIMENT." This grant cancellation reportedly saved $0.
A $3,143,795 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services to Ohio State for an unknown purpose. The cancellation reportedly saved $734,515.
A $300,000 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services to OSU's Center for Vocational Education. The cancellation reportedly saved the entire $300,000.
But an Ohio State spokesperson looked into these grants with the university's research department. He said there is no stop work order issued for the Department of Defense grant, and Ohio State could not find any grants matching those descriptions. Ohio State set a record with more than $1.58 billion spent on research in the 2024 fiscal year. The university announced the 9% increase in research funding on March 19, celebrating its status as a top 15 research university under the National Science Foundation’s Higher Education Research and Development survey rankings. Although DOGE has cancelled at least one Ohio State research grant already, these newly reported cancellations could not be verified.
"We do not have a stop work order for the first grant. For the other two, we haven’t found grants matching the description you shared," the spokesperson said. "Keep in mind that grant awards, stop work orders and cancellations come from the awarding agency, not from DOGE."
NBC4 sorted through the federal resource detailing grants and contracts to see if notice to Ohio State may have been delayed. However, the official spending site also did not reveal any grants to Ohio State from the Department of Health and Human Services that matched either description.
NBC4 was able to locate the Department of Defense grant, which was $449,984 in total. All of this funding has already been granted to the university, according to the U.S. spending database. Although other DOGE cancellations have been indicated on this site, this grant has no indication it is halted. Instead, the grant was continued on Feb. 4, and the website said this grant will end in March 2026.
NBC4 contacted multiple government agencies, DOGE workers and the White House press team for clarification, but none has commented on the inconsistencies. ...read more read less
