Mar 30, 2025
(KRON) -- As the 2025 Major League Baseball season starts in March, Forbes released its annual list of the most valuable teams. The San Francisco Giants were listed as the fifth-most valuable team in MLB, according to Forbes' list released on March 26.
The Giants' estimated value in 2025 stands at
$4 billion, Forbes reports. Despite that figure being a 5 percent increase from the previous year, the team still recorded an operating loss of $24 million.
According to Forbes, the average MLB team is worth about $2.6 billion. The Giants' estimated valuation is well above that. Charles B. Johnson has the largest ownership stake of the Giants at an estimated 25 percent, according to Bloomberg.

In 2024, the Giants had the 10th-highest payroll in MLB at around $211 million.
A notable team just outside the top five includes the New York Mets (No. 6 at $3.2 billion). The Mets, according to USA Today, had the highest payroll in 2024 at $305 million.
The New York Yankees have remained the most valuable MLB team every year since 1998 when Forbes began its list. They are the first MLB team to be worth more than $8 billion. The Giants' nemesis, Los Angeles Dodgers, were listed as the second-most valuable team for the 14th straight year.
A's value skyrockets upon Oakland departure
No other team saw a larger increase in value more than the A's, according to Forbes. Despite moving into a minor league ballpark in Sacramento for 2025, the team's value jumped 50% and is currently valued at $1.8 billion.
Forbes said the A's eventual move to Las Vegas has increased the team's value.
"Many around the sport have high hopes for the Athletics’ eventual move to Las Vegas and the plan for a new stadium there, but after a miserable end to their 57-year run in Oakland, even the stopgap situation isn’t looking so bad, with the team’s season-ticket base having grown significantly since last year," Forbes writes.
The increase in valuation comes even after a year in which the Athletics recorded the lowest payroll in MLB at around $60 million per year. According to USA Today, the team's 2024 payroll was $15 million less than 29th-ranked Pittsburgh Pirates ($85,760,000). ...read more read less
