FREETOWN, Mass. (WLNE) — It was a close call for students at a railroad crossing on the new South Coast Rail line in Freetown last week.
The MBTA shared a video of a commuter rail train thundering by a school bus filled with students, parked underneath a crossing gate near the line.
The Freetow
n Lakeville Regional School District said the bus driver stopped at the painted line to check for oncoming trains, and as they began to move forward, the crossing bells and lights came on.
The driver then reversed, with the crossing arm hitting the front of the bus, and the train passing by about 45 seconds later.
MBTA officials discussed the incident at a board meeting on March 27, claiming it was the result of human error.
The MBTA also emphasized that no one was in danger based on where the bus stopped.
FLRSD said the bus company is in contact with the MBTA regarding the incident.
No one was injured.
