Excelsior Springs VA working to rebuild after car crashed through roof

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. -- The Clay-Ray Veterans Association building was left with extensive damage after a car went airborne and crashed into the roof on Feb. 15.
Memorial Hall has been closed since then.
“We're all looking forward to getting back in there and getting things open again,
” said Clay-Ray Veterans Association Board President Chris Stull.

Stull hopes the repair process moves quickly so they can reopen and restart operations and events that bring in income, something they haven't been able to do since Feb. 15.
“They've got permits, so they're starting work on everything. We don’t have a timeline right now for when we will be back open. They've got to get in there and do a lot of major work before the building inspector will permit us back in the building,” Stull explained.
The crash left a large hole in the roof and extensive damage inside the building.
Recently, the Veterans Association board learned how much it would cost to repair the damage.
“Right now, we're looking at about $256,000 in damage, and by the time it's all said and done, I expect it probably will go up from there,” Stull said.
“The insurance is covering everything. They haven't said anything about any of it being our cost. So, other than the deductible, we shouldn't be looking at anything.”
The loss of income during the closure has been challenging as the association still faces monthly expenses.
“It’s pretty major because not only are we missing bingo on Friday nights, we have our bar, we had the kitchen. We're not getting any income from that. That's been pretty major with not having any income from all three of those,” Stull explained.
Stull said community members have been supportive during the closure, and many have reached out looking for ways to help.

“The best way is you can donate on Venmo, or you can get a hold of one of us and you can donate,” Stull said.
There isn’t a definite timeline for when repairs will be completed. Stull hopes they’ll be able to reopen sometime in May.
