It was a breezy and mild finish to the weekend Sunday as we played the waiting game for the much advertised storm system that is expected to being strong to severe thunderstorms across Central and Eastern Kentucky into the early hours of Monday. It’s a “Weather Impact Day” for the entire regi
on as all modes of severe weather are on the table with damaging winds being the primary threat! Much of Central and Eastern Kentucky are under a Level 3 severe risk (out of 5) with the latest severe wind threat probability (winds over 58 miles per hour or greater) is up to around 45% for a good swath of the Ohio Valley.
With this system moving through during the overnight hours you’ll need to have a way to get your alerts and have your safety plan in place! Of course we’ll be in the ABC 36 Storm Team Weather Center all night long keeping you updated on any threatening weather. Much of the data shows a squall line of storms moving through with damaging winds and a quick spin-up tornado on the table, which is pretty typical for our spring severe weather season. The threat should be over into Monday morning with a few lingering showers before we dry out and that’s something we will need given a very active weather pattern ahead in the coming days.
April will start quietly with some sunshine and highs in the low 60s before yet another strong storm system moves into the Ohio Valley late Wednesday and into Thursday. The Storm Prediction Center already has a 30% elevated risk out in the extended severe weather outlook for late Wednesday and Wednesday night so we may be looking at a repeat with the severe weather threat. The biggest issue is that the cold front is expected to stall out over the region late next week keeping the strong storm threat in play on Thursday but more concerning is the potential for some significant flooding. With several waves of energy riding along the stalled out front, we could be looking at 6″-8″ rainfall totals between now and late in the week with some of the data showing 10″ plus for far Western Kentucky. This would cause some major issues and something we’ll have to watch closely in the coming days.
