INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — At least nine tornado warnings and more than a couple dozen severe thunderstorm warnings were issued Sunday afternoon and night a
s a gusty system moved across the state.
The National Weather Service at Chicago reports a person in Valparaiso, Indiana, died when a semi truck rolled onto a person southeast of the intersection of U.S. 30 and State Road 49. Winds in the area gusted to 81 mph about 2 p.m. Central time (3 p.m. Eastern time).
The semi was one of at least three that had been overturned during strong winds, according to reports to the National Weather Service.
No other injuries from the storms were immediately reported.
More than 114,000 customers of Hoosier electricity utilities were without power shortly before 8:30 p.m., according to poweroutage.us.
In addition to gusty winds, some areas suffered hail damage. Near Evansville and Terre Haute, hail with the diameter of peas and quarters was reported amid torrential rail.
In South Bend and nearby Elkhart in northern Indiana, more than 30 reports of trees falling into houses were reported.
Photo shows metal roof panels peeled from farm outbuilding at Benton County Fairgrounds in Boswell. In Cass County, structural damage to a barn and a silo was reported near Logansport, with sheet metal hanging from power lines.
In North Judson in Starke County, large sections of the roof were blown off St. Peter Lutheran Church & School in North Judson.
In Fulton County, the emergency management agency had a small radio tower downed.

From Storm Track 8: Severe thunderstorm warning remains in effect until 5:45 p.m. for parts of Clay, Parke, Sullivan and Vigo counties. Wind gusts of 60 mph are the main hazard.

From Storm Track 8: A number of severe thunderstorm warnings continue north of Indianapolis. That part of the line will push toward and near Muncie and Fort Wayne
Along and south of I-70 still in line for severe storms from southern Illinois in the next three to five hours.
