Mar 30, 2025
CORONADO, Calif. (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A new movie, "Warfare," is heading to theatres in April. A premiere screening for the production was held in Coronado on Saturday night.
"Warfare" is a true story of a mission in Iraq back in 2006 whilst in enemy territory that went wrong, all based on the memory
of the war veterans who lived it.
It was a hometown screening as three of the characters portrayed in the film are San Diego locals, including Joe Hildebrand (played by Joseph Quinn/character: Sam), Brian Alazzawi (played by Noah Centineo/character: Brian) and Elliott Miller (played by Cosmo Jarvis).
The three San Diegans attended the premiere Saturday night and participated in the group's Q & A forum after the movie screening.

Plus, director, writer and Iraq war veteran Ray Mendoza went through SEAL training in Coronado, just steps away from where he stood for the premiere.
“A little symbolic, full circle, as we all come here as students to get screened for BUDS and to be a SEAL. We spend a lot of our time here, going to theatres, getting our hair cut right across the street actually, eating at that café," Mendoza said. "I think its just a really honest, truthful depiction of what a lot of us go through.”
The movie is based on the memory of the people who lived it, and Mendoza said going through and recalling what happened with others was therapeutic.
“It was a lot, a lot of emotions and memories that I had to unpack. It took a group effort. A lot of the guys that were there contributed in a lot of ways. I cant remember everything, it took a village to bring it to life," Mendoza said.
D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai portrays Ray Mendoza in the film and said it was nerve-wracking to be in San Diego for a premiere since it's a big military town.

“I hope this is going to be a great outlet and great opportunity for veterans who went through similar experiences like the men went through on this day, and I hope this is a good way for them to express themselves or a way for them to express what happened to them, where sometimes its indescribable," said Woon-A-Tai.
“I think we were all kind of unified over this; want to depict warfare environment accurately and in a way that was devoid of glorification or romanticization in a way that occasion Hollywood hasn’t always got right," said actor Will Poulter. "And I think it’s important for us that veterans feel accurately represented by the film. It's also important for civilians and folks that aren’t veterans that whatever their perspective is on war and the decision to go to war are rooted in things that are truthful.”
