'Spring Break Blast' ends, summer glowup begins with new exhibit at Science City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- As spring break winds down, Union Station's Science City is quietly preparing for a busy summer filled with new activities.
Spring break brought thousands of visitors to Science City to learn and play. Jarvis the robot has been a centerpiece at the attraction for about a year.
Guests can program him to talk, sing, show emotion, change colors, and even dance — and yes, you guessed it, his best move is the robot.

An exhibit exploring the wonders of the human brain includes a lie detector, a game to test memory and reaction time, and even an activity that measures brain waves by moving a ball through a tube.
And soon enough, a brand-new exhibit is set to open in early May.
"It’s called Light Lab, and it’s all about light in the electromagnetic spectrum," said Union Station Marketing Coordinator Jon Dudrey.
"It explains what makes light visible and what about waves that we can’t see—how those interact with our daily lives. It was actually designed by students in Kansas City."
The program Dudrey is referring to is called, "Burn & McDonnell Battle of the Brains."
This competition gives metro-area schools the ability to present an exhibit concept for Science City in the hopes of being given a grant for STEM education.
This upcoming exhibit is a perfect example and reflection of the intelligent minds of today's youth.

Dudrey said, "We have a partnership with Burns & McDonnell, and every two years, they hold a competition where school kids visit Science City, explore what’s already here, and suggest what else is needed — what’s missing and what would be cool."
The competition is launching its eighth competition cycle in July 2025! For updates and more information, click here.
As for Science City itself, the family-friendly destination is open at Union Station Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
