Man arrested after pursuit, crossing state and county lines, crashes

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) -- A vehicle pursuit that ended in a crash resulted in the arrest of a man who is allegedly connected to multiple crimes in Michigan and Indiana counties.
Saturday, just before 4:30 p.m., the Steuben County Sheriff's Office was told of a vehicle pursuit initiated by t
he Branch County Sheriff's Office heading southbound from Branch County, Michigan, about to cross county lines.
After crossing into county lines, before Steuben County deputies could respond, the white pickup truck crashed into the front of a home on State Road 327, just south of US 20. After a struggle with the suspect, later identified as 51-year-old James Edward Williams of Bronson, Michigan, Branch County Sheriff's Officers took him into custody.
When Steuben County deputies arrived on the scene, they offered assistance to Branch County Officers and attempted to provide medical assistance to Williams. He refused medical treatment from EMS at the scene, so he was transported by deputies to an area Emergency Room.

An interview with Williams revealed that he allegedly crashed through the road construction barricade and nearly hit two roadway construction workers on SR 327 near the Indiana Toll Road overpass.
According to an investigation done by both Sheriff's Departments, it was discovered that following the crash, Williams "battered" one of the officers out of Branch County when attempting to take him into custody.
Williams was taken into custody and primarily charged with;
Theft of a Motor Vehicle, a level 6 felony
Resisting Law Enforcement Using a Vehicle, level 6 felony
Battery to a Public Safety Official, level 6 felony
Criminal Recklessness, level 6 felony
Resisting Law Enforcement, class A misdemeanor
Reckless Driving, class A misdemeanor
Possession of Marijuana, class B misdemeanor
Possession of Paraphernalia, class C misdemeanor
It is also believed that Williams could be connected to crimes out of LaGrange County and St. Joseph, Michigan. Williams was booked into the Steuben County Jail on Saturday after medical clearance.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may be issued out of Branch and St. Joseph Counties in Michigan and LaGrange County in Indiana. ...read more read less
