Bernalillo Open Space and ABQ Backyard hosts Backyard Refuge Day

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Dozens of 'Burqueños visited the historic Gutierrez-Hubbell house on Isleta to learn all they could about transforming a backyard into a wildlife-friendly space. The event was hosted by Bernalillo County open space and the ABQ Backyard Refuge Program.

Guests got to enjoy a variety of workshops on topics like edible and medicinal weeds, identifying local birds and native plants, and even how to get their yard certified as an official backyard refuge. "We really want everyone to be involved, and even if you're pulling back some of the gravel and weed cloth in your yard and planting some sunflowers, that really matters to our pollinators and so we want everybody to get involved with helping our wildlife," said Laurel Ladwig, ABQ Backyard Refuge Program.
Officials say the program was launched in 2019, and they continue to see more people come out every year. Visitors all received a free plant to take home. ...read more read less
