FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — Eighteen student rowers and one coach are safely back on land after high winds and rough water conditions put an abrupt stop to their practice session at South Watuppa Pond on Saturday.
Tabor Academy's rowing coach tells 12 News his team decided to practice at the pon
d on Saturday after a previously scheduled scrimmage fell through.
During practice, windy conditions caused high waves, and several boats began taking on water, the school said in a statement, though it stressed that lifejackets were available for all students.
By the time Fall River fire, police, and EMS departments arrived at the pond, everyone had safely exited the water with help from local residents, the fire department said.
Fire officials said Fall River EMS evaluated the 18 students and their coach for cold exposure and minor injuries before they were transported to local hospitals for further evaluation and treatment.
In a statement, Tabor Academy confirmed that all students have since been reunited with their coaches and families.
"Tabor rowers are trained to respond to evolving conditions on the water. Today, our students’ preparedness, composure, and teamwork were evident in their response," a spokesperson for the school said. "We are proud of how they represented themselves and our school in a moment of unexpected challenge."
Tabor Academy thanked the Fall River Fire Department and area medical personnel for their "swift and professional response."
The Watuppa Rowing Center also thanked first responders in a post on social media.
The Fall River Fire Department reminded all rowers and boaters to exercise caution during water activities, especially when conditions are rough.
