Moreno and Great Crossing reign supreme in KHSAA Sweet Sixteen

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW)- Great Crossing boy’s basketball is taking home the 2025 KHSAA Sweet Sixteen trophy to Georgetown after beating Bowling Green, 71-61, in the finals at Rupp Arena on Saturday.
Kentucky commit Malachi Moreno’s team-high 24 points and 15 rebounds led the way for th
e Warhawks to win its first ever championship. Great Crossing was in front for most of the game and had their largest lead of 24 midway through the third quarter.
In the paint, Crossing had its way scoring 40 points and capitalized off of second chance points 13-2. On defense, the Warhawks held the Purples to 27% shooting from distance and two tallies on the break.
At the half, Great Crossing led by 15. As the second half went on, Bowling Green chipped their opposition’s lead to single digits before the Warhawks woke up again. Moreno, Gage Richardson and Vince Dawson, who all made the All-Tournament Team, combined for all 19 of Crossing’s fourth quarter points to put the Purples away.
Head Coach Steve Page’s team won its final game of the season after beating Daviess County, Cooper and Montgomery County in the previous rounds. The triumph for the 11th Region and now state champions comes a year after Travis Perry and Lyon County knocked them out in the semifinals on the way to a title of their own.
