Portsmouth Fire Rescue assists with overturned vessel near City Park

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) -- A person had to be evaluated for possible hypothermia after a sailing vessel overturned near Portsmouth City Park Saturday afternoon.
According to officials, just after 1 p.m., crews were dispatched to the Western Branch aresa of the Elizabeth River for reports of a swim
mer in distress.
Crews arrived to the scene and found two people in the water next to an overturned sailing vessel. The pair were said to be in shallow water attempting to bring the vessel back to the shore.
A 10 On Your Side viewer sent photos of the scene after noticing what she though was a derilict vessel.

"I was scanning the water and noticed what I thought was a derelict boat in the water, and that's not so unusual for Portsmouth," DeAnn Troen said. "I looked at the photo I took and realized there were people in the water."
One of the people were able to make it back safely to the shore without assistance, but the other individual requested assistance, saying they were cold and exhausted. Upon arrival to the shore, the person was evaluated for possible hypothermia.
