Mar 29, 2025
LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Showers and a few thunderstorms will move into central and eastern Kentucky overnight into early Sunday morning. While these storms are not expected to be severe, some areas may see brief downpours and gusty winds. Temperatures will remain unseasonably warm, w
ith lows in the upper 50s to low 60s.
Sunday Afternoon – Monday Morning (Weather Impact Day): Our focus remains on a strong storm system arriving Sunday evening into Monday morning. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed central and western Kentucky under a Level 3 (Enhanced) Severe Risk, while eastern Kentucky is under a Level 2 (Slight) Risk.
All modes of severe weather are possible, with damaging wind gusts as the primary threat. A “Significant” wind risk has been outlined, meaning wind gusts of 74 mph or higher are possible. The tornado risk is highest just west of our area, particularly along and west of I-65, where the SPC has indicated a “Significant” tornado risk. While we do have a tornado threat locally, it will decrease from west to east overnight.
The severe threat will arrive in western Kentucky by Sunday evening, progressing eastward overnight. Expect the strongest storms to move through central and eastern Kentucky between midnight and 6 AM Monday. This means the worst of the weather could impact our region while many are sleeping. Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather alerts before going to bed Sunday night!
Monday – Tuesday: The cold front will sweep through on Monday, bringing an end to the severe weather threat but ushering in cooler temperatures. Highs will be in the mid-60s, with breezy northwest winds. A brief period of dry weather will settle in Monday night into Tuesday, with lows dipping into the mid-30s and highs on Tuesday in the upper 50s to mid-60s.
Midweek Storm Threat (Wednesday – Wednesday Night): Another significant storm system will approach by Wednesday, with the SPC already placing central Kentucky, including Lexington, in a Level 3 (Enhanced) Severe Risk. This is rare for an extended outlook and indicates strong confidence in another severe weather event.
A powerful low-pressure system will bring strong winds and the potential for damaging storms Wednesday evening into Wednesday night. Heavy rain could also lead to localized flooding concerns.
Beyond Wednesday, showers and storms may linger into late next week, with 4-6 inches of total rainfall possible across Kentucky through the weekend. This could lead to additional flooding concerns, so we will be watching this setup closely.
