Terre Haute man tased and arrested after police chase

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WISH) — A Terre Haute man on Friday was tased and arrested by an Indiana State Police (ISP) trooper after a vehicle pursuit, ISP says in a Saturday news release.

er not wearing a seatbelt. The driver was identified as Edwin B. Phillips, 69, of Terre Haute, Indiana.
The trooper detected the odor of alcohol coming from Phillips. Several field sobriety tests were administered, and Phillips failed each test. While the trooper was retrieving an item from his police vehicle to assist with the operating while intoxicated investigation, Phillips returned to his vehicle, locked the doors, and drove away.
The trooper returned to his police vehicle and a small pursuit ensued through the alleys of Terre Haute, ending when Phillips came to a stop behind a residence and exited his vehicle. The trooper pursued Phillips on foot, giving loud verbal commands for him to stop. but Phillips disregarded the commands and continued walking away.
It was at this time that the trooper deployed his taser, striking Phillips and immediately taking him into custody. After Phillips was placed on his feet, he lunged toward and kicked the trooper. Phillips was taken to a local hospital, where he was medically cleared. He was then taken to the Vigo County Jail.
Phillips is being preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated – prior conviction, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, battery against a public safety official, and resisting law enforcement.
