Mayor Young proposes using xAI tax funds to benefit Boxtown

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Mayor Paul Young took to social media Saturday morning to address residents' concerns about xAI.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Mayor Young acknowledged the recent worries Memphians have voiced about xAI and the impact it will have on the local community and environment.
"I understand the concerns that have been raised about air quality, the use of natural gas turbines and the potential strain this project could have on our water supply," Young said. "I also recognize that the speed of this project's development may have left some members of our community feeling there wasn't enough time for community engagement."
Still, Young said that he sees xAI as an opportunity for the city's betterment.
"xAI has already invested over $10 billion to revitalize the previously abandoned Electrolux facility and that investment comes without tax abatements," Young said. "That means tens of millions of dollars in new revenue - revenue that will be directed back into our neighborhoods."

Young added that he is working on an ordinance that would dedicate a portion of the tax revenue created by xAI to support projects and improvements for those living in the 38109 zip code.
Young also said that he asked xAI to build a wastewater treatment facility, which is already under construction.
According to him, the $80 million facility will be designed to treat and reuse wastewater, which would reduce industrial use of Memphis' aquifer from xAI, TVA and Nucor.
"The xAI team has also developed a battery farm that allows them to take their operations entirely off our power grid during times of power instability or high use," Young said. "They are the only industrial or corporate partner currently able to remove themselves from the grid altogether when needed." ...read more read less
