Daughter pleads for homecare assistance from federal leaders for elderly mother

HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — A woman from Washington D.C. took a quick trip to Henrico County recently for everything but a leisure matter -- instead it was an urgent visit for her mother's health.
"This is heartbreaking, you know, she's 83 years old and I want help for her," said Tanya Hutchins
of Washington D.C. "I want her to be safe. I want her to be secure. My mother, my siblings want the same thing. My stepdad wants the same thing."
Hutchins' explained to 8News her mother has suffered two falls in the past few days while recovering from a broken shoulder due to a fall the night before her birthday.
Hutchins said that although her step-father lives with her mother, he cannot lift her up. A caregiver would be ideal, but the costs aren't, according to Hutchins.
"She needs somebody to help her take her medications, to help bathe her, to help her get to appointments if she needs to go to the doctor, and she's a little bit confused now," Hutchins said. "So I think that's something she really needs on a daily basis -- but when they're $35 an hour and up, we really can't afford that."
With her mother not qualifying for Medicaid due to her income and her health insurance not covering home healthcare, Hutchins said she was left without options but to reach out to Congressman Rob Wittman.
"I thought writing to her representatives in Congress is the next step to create some sort of change, because the way that the system is right now, there's not enough help at all," Hutchins said. "If you don't have disposable income of 5 to $10000 a month, you can't put your relative in an assisted living facility."
8News reached out to Congressman Wittman's office and was given this statement:
“Our office takes all constituent inquiries and concerns very seriously, and our district team regularly updates the congressman on the cases they are working on. Our team is looking into Ms. Hutchin’s case — which we received on Wednesday — on behalf of her mother to determine the most effective way to advocate for her. Assisting our senior community is very important to Congressman Wittman, and our entire team is evaluating the best course of action.”
