A defendant in a domestic violence case fought two Riverside County sheriff’s deputies as he was being handcuffed in a Riverside courtroom on Friday, March 28, a brawl that sent all three to a hospital.
The defendant, identified by the District Attorney’s Office as Ryan James Chalfant, and the d
eputies were expected to recover from their unspecified injuries, said Lt. Deirdre Vickers, a Sheriff’s Department spokeswoman.
Chalfant, 31, was facing two counts of inflicting corporal injury on a spouse or cohibatant with a prior conviction in the past seven years, one count of making criminal threats and one count of false imprisonment, all felonies, Superior Court records show.
Chalfant had been out of jail after posting $50,000 bail the day after his Feb. 14 arrest in Home Gardens, the county jail log shows. But Friday, during a hearing in a third-floor courtroom at the Riverside County Hall of Justice in which Chalfant was scheduled to enter pleas, Judge Jennifer Gerard set bail at $1 million and ordered him to be arrested.
“When deputies attempted to take the male into custody, he resisted arrest. Deputies ultimately detained the suspect,” Vickers said.
Chalfant was convicted of felony evading police, inflicting corporal injury and criminal threats in 2022, according to court records.
Gerard rescheduled the arraignment for April 1.
