Purdue eliminated from NCAA tournament after last second loss to Houston
Mar 28, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — It was heartbreak for Purdue at Lucas Oil Stadium.
With the game tied with two seconds left, Houston had the ball under the basket. Houston’s Milos Uzan inbounded the ball, got it right back, and got the game-winning layup with less than a second remaining.
Purdue
guard Braden Smith had a turnaround heave from half court for the win, but it came up short.
Purdue was eliminated from the NCAA Tournament, losing to Houston, 62-60.
“Really proud of our guys,” Purdue head coach Matt Painter said. “I thought we had a great fight tonight and laid it all on the line. That’s the only thing you can ask, for your team to give everything they had. Houston was one play better than us, and I thought it was one of those games that both teams deserve to win.”
Purdue fought back from down 10 points in the second half. The Boilermakers tied the game with 35 seconds remaining on a Camden Heide corner three-pointer. The crowd in Lucas Oil Stadium, overwhelmingly favoring Purdue, erupted.
But the comeback fell just short.
“I mean, yeah, it sucks,” Smith said. “You want to win every single game that we play and going down 10, a lot of teams give up like, oh, that’s game. I thought we fought really hard, and we dug down deep defensively to get those stops to come back, and we did everything we could, and we just had a little miscommunication at the end, and they converted on it, so props to them.”
Houston had the opportunity to win at the end after a controversial no call on a push off by Uzan. Painter did not comment on the call, saying he did not see it.
Fletcher Loyer led Purdue in scoring with 16 points. Smith tied a season high with 15 assists.
Purdue made it to the Sweet 16 for the third time in the last four seasons and the sixth time in the last eight tournaments.
