HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Business is booming at Oahu's city golf courses. Officials say it's thanks to targeted marketing toward women and re-investing some money back into the course.
Golfers in the know say the Ted Makalena Golf Course in Waipahu is a hidden gem.

"Yes this is the best kept secret so we don't want everyone to come out here," said golfer Cynthia Sato, laughing. "If they can experience the other courses first and see how they can compare those courses to this course."
Makalena is one of six municipal golf courses on the island. And supervisors say business is hitting historic levels.
The course sees about 450,000 rounds a year, generating about a million dollars a month. Both figures up about 25 percent from pre-pandemic levels.
"Under this administration, we definitely been afforded more opportunities to put our money back into our golf courses and I think the results have shown itself our course conditions have gotten better, more people are coming to our courses," said Jordan Abe, city golf course system administrator.

Supervisors at Makalena say they've converted greens to paspalum and upgraded the irrigation system. It's in such great shape that it is hosting junior tournaments.
"It's a big turnaround because of the people before me and the current staff we have now that are collectively working together to get this place to what it is now," said Chad Higaki, Ted Makalena Golf Course superintendent.
And of course there's the prices. If you have a golf ID card, green fees are as low as $28. The price is even cheaper for seniors and free for juniors.
"It's wonderful, it's better than great," said golfer Jean Azama. "You know it allows us to play as many times as we want at a very reasonable price."
The restaurant at Makalena has been vacant for years. Only the Ala Wai has a permanent food vendor. The city has been offering temporary permits to some food vendors so they can do pop ups.

The city says that's part of its long term goals. All to put out the best product for golfers.
"What's the goal to shoot today? Do you really want me to answer that," Sato said. "I'll take the Fifth on that. I just wanna enjoy myself. It's a beautiful day, I mean, how can you not come out to, a beautiful day, on a nice golf course like this." ...read more read less
